A team of East Surrey police officers will be putting their physical and mental skills to the test when they take part in a gruelling 24 hour challenge. PCs Adam Staplehurst, Mick Eaton and Nicola Smith from the Targeted Patrol Team based at Reigate, have signed up .gif) for the 24seven Challenge which is raising money for children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent. The fundraising event, which requires individuals or teams of three to complete seven challenges in 24 hours, takes place over the weekend of the 11-12 October in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. It is being billed as the ‘ultimate adventure challenge' and over the 24 hours participants will cover the distance of a marathon on foot, bike and canoe. Challenges will also be thrown in along the way to test mental dexterity as well as physical ability. The more money each team or individual raises in sponsorship, the more rewards they will receive to help them successfully complete the challenge. All money raised will go to CLIC Sargent, which provides support for children and their families dealing with the impact of childhood cancer. Adam, Mick and Nicola, who have called themselves Team GB and will be representing Surrey Police, have already collected £355 which has earned them two rewards - a kit list and a pre-event briefing pack. Adam, who got the team together, said: “CLIC Sargent is a fantastic charity as it gives tremendous support to children and their families when it is most needed. My young niece was diagnosed with cancer and is currently in remission, so it's a charity I feel particularly strongly about and very keen to support.”
It's not the first time the team has been involved in physically demanding charity events. Adam and Mick have twice taken part in the London to Brighton Cycle Ride for the British Heart Foundation, Mick has completed the New York Marathon for Whizz Kids, and Nicola has run the Race for Life for Cancer Research UK. Adam added: “All of us need to be physically and mentally fit and I'm sure when the weekend comes we will be ready for the challenge! We're all a bit apprehensive, but very much looking forward to it. It's by far the biggest event that Nicola and I have undertaken and all three of us are eager to raise as much money as possible for such a worthwhile cause.” To sponsor Team GB and help raise money for CLIC Sargent, go to www.24sevenchallenge.co.uk/surpol |
